The School Curriculum

We follow the September 2014 National Curriculum. This can be viewed in full on the government website and we have provided a Parent Guide to the National Curriculum.
 
The curriculum is all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning and personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children.
 
Each term the teachers for each class send out Curriculum Outlines of the planned projects and work ahead for that term to the parents.  The Class/Curriculum Outlines can be found under the 'Children - Class Pages' section of the website. 

It also includes the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential. There will be a new statutory National Curriculum from September 2014.
 
The curriculum is designed to provide access and opportunity for all children. If we think it necessary to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of individual children, then we do so only after their parents have been consulted.

Our curriculum currently includes:
 

English, Phonics, Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, History, Geography, Music, Art, ICT, P.E., R.E., PSHE.

 

The Phonics programmes we use in school are Letters and Sounds: http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/ alongside Jolly Phonics actions to aid learning. Current reading schemes used in school are:

  • Oxford Reading Tree,
  • Dandelion readers and
  • Talisman readers.
 
There is an extensive range of free reading material available for all children in each classroom and our library.

Our governing body’s Teaching and Learning Committee is responsible for monitoring the way the school curriculum is implemented. This committee looks at each subject area to ensure best practice through review and development..

Curriculum - Special Needs

While every child has his or her own special qualities, some children will need more support at times during their career in school. Supporting children with specific needs, with extra resources and classroom assistant where necessary, is a priority across the Federation of schools. We offer special language and reading programmes to slow and reluctant readers, as well as advanced teaching programmes for the more able.

Sometimes there are specific learning problems to tackle. Where necessary, after a multi-professional assessment of a particular child’s needs, a 'statement' is given to that child which formalises future educational needs and normally releases extra funding from the local authority. The individual pupil’s needs will determine how best we can cater for them. Sometimes all that is needed is help in diagnosing a problem and practical suggestions for remedies.

Pupil Premium
  • The pupil premium was introduced by the government in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’).
PE Statement
  • In our Federation of schools, we believe PE and sports contribute to our pupils well being and social development, working together co-operatively and as part of a team, but most importantly to their physical development. It is our belief that the skills they acquire in primary school should be skills for life and we endeavour to develop a love of sports throughout the children's time in our schools.

SEND Information Report
Cheriton Bishop Primary School is a mainstream setting with 85 pupils from Reception to Year 6. We are passionate about inclusion and seek to take a holistic view of underachievement and the support of vulnerable pupils in accordance with the requirements of the 2014 SEND Code of Practice.
